Ingredients

Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix, 15 oz)
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk (fat-free is okay, 14 oz)

Topping and Garnish

  • 1 pkg Cool Whip topping (8 oz)
  • 1/2 bag Heath bits (8 oz bag)
  • Caramel sundae sauce (to drizzle)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix and the can of pumpkin puree. Stir well until fully blended and smooth.
  2. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan. Bake according to the cake mix package instructions for the size, usually around 35–40 minutes at 350°F (175°C), or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Add Sweetened Condensed Milk: Once the cake is out of the oven but still warm, evenly pour the can of sweetened condensed milk over the top, allowing it to soak into the cake for added moisture and sweetness.
  4. Cool the Cake: Let the cake cool completely to room temperature, so that the toppings won’t melt.
  5. Apply the Cool Whip: Spread the entire 8 oz container of Cool Whip evenly over the cooled cake surface, creating a smooth, creamy layer.
  6. Add Heath Bits: Sprinkle half of the Heath bits evenly over the Cool Whip layer to add a delightful crunchy texture.
  7. Drizzle Caramel Sauce: Drizzle caramel sundae sauce generously over the top of the Heath bits and Cool Whip for a sweet finishing touch.
  8. Refrigerate before Serving: Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to set the layers and enhance the flavors.

Notes

  • You can substitute fat-free or regular sweetened condensed milk depending on your preference.
  • Use pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie mix to avoid added spices and sugars.
  • This cake is best served chilled and can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • For a nutty twist, sprinkle chopped pecans along with the Heath bits.
  • Leftover cake can be frozen in airtight containers for up to 2 months.
