Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)

Toffee Topping

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

Chocolate and Cinnamon Topping

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.
  2. Arrange crackers: Lay the saltine crackers in a single, tight layer covering the entire baking sheet. The crackers can be close but should not overlap.
  3. Make toffee: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring to create a thick caramel.
  4. Pour toffee over crackers: Immediately pour the boiling toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, using a spatula to spread and cover all the crackers as best as possible.
  5. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 to 7 minutes. The toffee will bubble and become fragrant.
  6. Add chocolate chips: Remove the tray from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let the chocolate sit for about 5 minutes to melt.
  7. Spread chocolate: Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, carefully spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer.
  8. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar: In a small bowl, combine granulated sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle this cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the melted chocolate layer.
  9. Finish with sea salt: Lightly sprinkle sea salt over the top to enhance the flavors and add a subtle salty crunch.
  10. Cool and break: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or place in the refrigerator until firm. Once set, break into pieces and serve or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh saltine crackers without any cracks.
  • Be careful when pouring the hot toffee mixture; it can burn if mishandled.
  • You can substitute semi-sweet chocolate chips with milk or dark chocolate chips according to preference.
  • Store leftover toffee in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • Adding nuts like chopped pecans or almonds on top before the chocolate sets can add extra texture and flavor.
