Sausage Filling
- 1 lb (450g) sausage meat or ground sausage
- ½ cup finely diced onion
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Puff Pastry and Topping
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking.
- Prepare the Filling: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, then remove from heat and let cool slightly. In a mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat with the cooked onion and garlic, dried sage, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to ensure it forms a rectangle approximately 10×12 inches (25×30 cm). If needed, trim the edges to create a neat rectangular shape.
- Assemble the Sausage Rolls: Spread the sausage mixture evenly along one long edge of the puff pastry forming a log shape, leaving a small border around the edges to seal properly. Roll the pastry over the filling tightly, pinch the edges to seal the seam, and place the roll seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Slice and Brush: Cut the rolled pastry into 1½-inch (4 cm) thick slices and arrange them evenly spaced on the baking sheet. Brush the tops of each roll generously with the beaten egg to give them a shiny, golden finish once baked.
- Bake: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and puffed and the sausage filling is fully cooked through.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature as a perfect festive appetizer or snack.
Notes
- Make sure to fully thaw the puff pastry before rolling out to avoid cracking.
- Use fresh herbs instead of dried for a brighter flavor if preferred; adjust quantities accordingly.
- You can substitute sausage meat with your choice of flavored sausage or ground meat for variation.
- Brush with milk instead of egg if you want to avoid using eggs.
- These sausage rolls can be made ahead and reheated in a warm oven for best texture.
