Ingredients

Scale

Cookie Dough

  • 1 (15.25 ounce) box Devil’s Food cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • black food coloring (optional)

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 13 tablespoons milk
  • green food coloring
  • Round green sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cookie Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the Devil’s Food cake mix, eggs, and oil. Mix thoroughly until a smooth, thick cookie dough forms. If desired, add black food coloring to enhance the spooky dark appearance of the dough;
  2. Shape the Cookie Cups: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a muffin pan or line with paper liners. Using your hands or a spoon, press the cookie dough evenly into the bottom and up the sides of each muffin cup, creating a cup shape;
  3. Bake the Cookie Cups: Place the muffin pan in the oven and bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cookie edges are set and slightly firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan;
  4. Make the Buttercream Frosting: While the cookie cups cool, beat the softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and 1 tablespoon of milk. Continue beating until light and fluffy. Add additional milk as needed to achieve a spreadable consistency. Add green food coloring a few drops at a time until the desired shade is reached;
  5. Assemble the Cauldron Cookie Cups: Once cookie cups are fully cooled, pipe or spoon the green buttercream frosting into each cookie cup generously, creating a cauldron effect. Sprinkle round green sprinkles on top to resemble bubbling magic or witchy bubbles;
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Allow the frosting to set for a few minutes before serving. These cauldron cookie cups are perfect for Halloween parties, themed events, or a fun homemade treat any day.

Notes

  • For extra festive flair, try adding edible glitter or spooky-shaped sprinkles on top;
  • If you want a more intense black cookie dough, add black food coloring gradually until you get the desired shade;
  • The cookie cups can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days;
  • Use softened butter to ensure the frosting is smooth and easy to spread;
  • Be careful not to overbake the cookie cups; they should be firm but not hard;
  • You can substitute canola oil with vegetable oil or light olive oil if preferred;
  • If making ahead, frost just before serving to maintain the best texture.
